ETIAS for students: short courses, visas and staying on

The EU has a page for students. Courses of up to 90 days need ETIAS once it starts. Longer ones need a student visa, and staying on afterwards brings an EES step.

By Published 4 min readHow we keep this accurate

An American on a summer course or language programme of up to 90 days will need an ETIAS authorisation once ETIAS is in operation. A student on a longer programme will need a student visa instead. The EU’s own page for students says both things. ETIAS is not in operation yet, the EU has not announced a start date, and no applications are being collected.

Does a US student on a short course need ETIAS?

Yes, once the system runs. The EU portal says students from visa-free countries can study in the 30 European countries requiring ETIAS “for up to 90 days in any 180-day period”. Those 30 are the 29 Schengen countries plus Cyprus. The ETIAS FAQ puts it the same way: “For shorter study programmes, you can apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation.”

The authorisation costs EUR 20. It is valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers multiple entries. The fee pageexplains who is exempt on age grounds. For the application itself, the students page lists a passport “valid for more than 3 months and not older than 10 years”, an email address and the online form.

When does a student need a visa instead of ETIAS?

When the programme runs longer than 90 days. The EU wording is direct: “If you want to come study in a European country requiring ETIAS for more than 90 days, you will need a student visa.” It sends readers to the consulate of the country they will study in for details, and anyone planning a semester abroad should do the same. Student visa rules are national, so this article does not try to summarise them.

ETIAS is not a visa, and the portal compares it with the US ESTA, Canada’s eTA and the UK ETA. Our ETIAS requirements page covers the passport rules in more detail.

Can a student stay on after the visa ends?

The EU says yes, for up to 90 more days. The students page states that you can remain in the European countries requiring ETIAS “for up to an additional 90 days without needing to leave and return”. It attaches two conditions:

  • a valid ETIAS travel authorisation from the moment your student visa expires; and
  • registration in the Entry/Exit System (EES).

The EES condition is the one most people miss. Registration normally happens at the border, but a student already inside Europe has not just crossed one. The portal says that if you stay for a short period after your student visa expires, “you will need to request your registration in the EES” from the authorities of the member state where you are studying or the one you intend to travel to. Ask the university’s international office, or the national immigration authority, how that request is made before the visa runs out.

Is a student with a long-stay visa registered in the EES?

Not at the border. The EES exemptions page lists “Holders of residence permits and long-stay visas” among the people the system does not apply to. That is why the registration step above only arises when the visa has ended and a short stay follows. Our guide to who is exempt from EES goes through the full list.

What should a student do now?

  • Short programme of 90 days or less: nothing to apply for yet. ETIAS is not open, and the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead. Press reporting points to 2027; that is reporting, not an official date. Check the status page.
  • Programme over 90 days: contact the consulate of the country you will study in about a student visa.
  • Plan to travel on after the visa ends: ask about the EES registration request and about ETIAS before the visa expires.
  • Ignore any site offering to apply for ETIAS today. The portal warns that unofficial sites exist, and our ETIAS scams guide shows how to spot them.
