ETIAS valid for 3 years: what it means for your Schengen trips

Most travellers planning for ETIAS read “valid for three years” and feel reassured. One application, three years of trips. That part is right. But the three-year figure describes the shelf life of the authorisation itself. It says nothing about how long you can stay in Europe on any given visit. That is governed by a separate rule, and ETIAS does not change it.

The Schengen 90-day limit applies to every visa-exempt traveller regardless of ETIAS status. An ETIAS authorisation does not extend it, pause it, or restart it. Two timers run alongside each other, and both matter before you book.

What does “valid for three years” actually mean?

The three-year clock starts on the date your ETIAS is issued and runs until it expires or until the passport used for the application expires, whichever is sooner. During that window you can make as many short trips to any of the 30 ETIAS-covered countries as you like. You do not pay again between trips. You do not reapply per visit.

So a single ETIAS issued in late 2027 could, in theory, cover a city break in 2027, a longer summer trip in 2028, and a short business visit in 2029. Three separate trips, one authorisation.

There is one catch. If your passport expires before the three-year ETIAS window closes, the authorisation expires with it. Why the 90-day rule still limits each stay

Whatever your ETIAS says, you can only spend 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area. Days in any Schengen country, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, Switzerland and the rest, all count towards the same shared total.

The 180-day period is not a fixed calendar block that flips on a set date. It rolls daily. The calculation works backwards from each day you are present: if the sum of your Schengen days in the preceding 180-day window reaches 90, you have reached the limit and cannot re-enter until enough of those days fall outside the window. An ETIAS with two years left on it does not grant you 90 days, then another 90, then another. Every entry is measured against the same rolling calculation. A long ETIAS validity simply means you are not reapplying for the permission; it does not broaden the stay limit in any way.

Does leaving Schengen reset the clock?

Not immediately. Leaving the Schengen area starts a process where your most recent days gradually drop out of the 180-day lookback window. But you cannot cross the border and return the next day expecting a fresh 90 days. The rule is continuous and rolling. Even travellers who were careful about this under the old passport-stamp system need to be precise now.

Since the Entry/Exit System went fully operational on 10 April 2026, every Schengen crossing is recorded electronically against your passport. Border officers and automated gates pull up your exact entry and exit history on screen. The ambiguity that existed before digital tracking is gone.

What about ETIAS and Schengen visas?

If you hold a valid Schengen visa rather than travelling visa-free, you do not need ETIAS. The authorisation is for visa-exempt nationals only. If you are travelling without a visa, as UK, US, Canadian and Australian passport holders currently do, ETIAS will be required once it goes live in 2027. The 90-day rule applies in both cases.

Bottom line

The three-year validity answers one question: how long before you need to apply again? The 90-day rule answers a different question: how long can you stay on this particular trip? They operate independently. A valid ETIAS is a condition of travel, not a stay allowance.
